    Description

    Cattail  (Typha sp.)
    Miocene
North Cady Mountains, near Barstow, California
**  Cattails are quite common as compression/impression fossils in the geologic record.  However, they are very scarce as fully silicified, perfectly preserved fossils.  The Mojave Desert has a few localities where the three dimensional silicified cattails have been uncovered.  The North Cady Mountains is one of those places, although these fossils are not at all numerous at this location.  This slab has a very nice preservation of a central stalk with several surrounding leaves, shown in detail on the close up photo.  There is also other vegetative debris which was on the bottom of an oasis pond, all of which was eventually silicified by volcanic ash from a nearby eruption and ash fall.  The cattail would have had a 1.75” in diameter.  If the Typha fossil species is not represented in your collection in unique silicified form - here is an opportunity to correct that deficiency with this nice piece!  This polished slice measures
5” x 5” on the polished face and it is 3/8” thick
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
